Richard Johnston

Dr. Johnston has been on the faculty at the University of Minnesota for 3 years where he was extensively involved in treating complex retinal conditions such as macular degeneration, retinal detachment, diabetes, and eye trauma. He was very involved in resident teaching and was awarded the surgical teacher of the year award in 2005 and the clinical teacher of the year award in 2006.

Dr. Johnston founded Edina Retina Consultants in 2006. His goal was to create a very high-quality retina practice in the Edina area where patients could be seen and receive the highest possible care in a pleasant and cordial atmosphere.

Dr. Johnston lives in Edina with his wife and 2 children, who attend the Normandale Elementary School. His outside interests include curling, skiing, golf, and swimming.

Robert C. Ramsay

Dr. Ramsay joined Edina Retina Consultants in March of 2017. He previously provided consultative care for retinal disease at the University of Minnesota from 1974 to 1988 and at VitreoRetinal Surgery, P.A., from 1988 to 2016. While at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Ramsay was the recipient of individual NIH/NEI research grants and, in addition, participated in a wide range of collaborative clinical trials related to important retinal diseases and causes of visual impairment.

Clinical research, sponsored by both the NEI and industry, was continued at VitreoRetinal Surgery, which maintains an active research department. Dr. Ramsay is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, The Retina Society, The Macula Society, and the American Society of Retina Specialists. He was the recipient of the Phillips Eye Institute Special Honored Guest Award in 2010 and the Budd Appleton Award for Service to Ophthalmology from the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology in 2016.

Dr. Ramsay is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Ramsay and his wife, Norma K. Ramsay, M.D., Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota, reside in Edina. The Ramsays have two sons and one grandchild.
