About Dr. Johnston

Doctor Richard Johnston

Dr. Johnston grew up in Toronto, Canada. He received his medical degree and residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto. He then proceeded to specialize in diseases of the retina and vitreous at the University of Southern California.

After initially practicing in Toronto, Dr. Johnston was recruited to the University of Minnesota where he practiced full-time for three years and remains on the adjunct faculty. He was extensively involved in treating complex retinal conditions such as macular degeneration, retinal detachments, diabetes, and eye trauma. He was very involved in resident teaching and was awarded both the Surgical Teacher of the Year award and the Clinical Teacher of the Year award.

Dr. Johnston founded Edina Retina Consultants in 2006. His goal was to create a very high-quality retina practice in the Edina area where patients could be seen and receive the highest possible care in a pleasant and cordial atmosphere.

Dr. Johnston has lived in Edina with his wife, Sue, for the last 20 years. They have two grown children who reside on the East Coast. His outside interests include golf, swimming, and skiing. He is an avid curler, although he has not had the opportunity to play much for the last several years.
